Pooka is a much-loved 16yr old TB gelding who is competing at Elementary and working at Medium level. Whilst progressing moderately well in his education, hacking three or four times a week and schooling twice, he suddenly became very ill, apparently overnight, in May 2007. He exhibited symptoms similar to laminitis, with extreme stiffness and discomfort when asked to move. Peritonitis was suspected initially, especially as the levels of fibrinogen in his blood samples were found to be extremely high. Although he appeared to be a very sick horse, after massive antibiotic therapy he seemed to perk up after about two days. Ultimately his illness was attributed to a viral infection, the exact cause of which is unknown.
However after a seemingly miraculous recovery from the acute symptoms, he continued to show signs of lethargy. His white blood cell count remained very low and his lack of energy was ongoing. Two months after his basic recovery he was still unable to raise an active walk under saddle and if his owner asked him to trot for even a hundred yards he would be exhausted on the way home and struggle the following day with general energy levels.
Pooka had his first Buqi session in July 2007 and has had two subsequent sessions since
(now Sept 2007). The treatment approach centred very much in activating the energy itself, clearing
the meridians and mending, what was experienced as, a rather large ‘hole’ in the energy field in the
lumber area!! Strange but true!
Pooka’s owner was immediately pleased with the initial response and is now delighted with the progress that has been made. After the first session she noticed a difference in his energy level, which continued to improve. She was careful to stay within slow work and not over-push his recovery, but even so, it was evident that Pooka’s reserves of energy were steadily being restored to normal levels, with no significant reverses between Buqi sessions.
Pooka has just come back from a training clinic (October) and his owner is delighted. His energy is back to normal but as an added bonus the canter work has changed radically. She describes it as being ‘light years ahead’ of where he was before his virus, and quite categorically states that the improvement can only be as a direct result of his Buqi sessions.
Pooka’s owner states: “As a fan of alternative treatments, I did not start out from a skeptical viewpoint. However, even I was taken aback by the positive change in Pooka‘s recovery from immediately after his first Buqi session. It had seemed as though there had been no improvement after the initial recovery from the obvious symptoms of the virus, and the impression I got was that his first Buqi session really “re-booted” his system.
I brought him back into work very slowly (probably more for my benefit than his!), but he is now bursting with energy. He looks well and his sense of humour has been fully restored. However, the most dramatic change is in the quality of his canter work. There seems to have been a big improvement in his ability to lift through the shoulder and come through from behind to produce a more balanced canter. His tendency to tighten through his back is much less marked. I am really excited by his progress!
